Merlins Victorious Against Stormers

by | Jan 29, 2018 | D1 Men

Glendale 63 – Little Rock 12

On Saturday the Glendale Merlins traveled to Arkansas to face the Little Rock Stormers in their second Division I game of the season. Despite muddy conditions, Glendale produced an exceptionally strong first half performance, jumping to an early 44-0 lead. The Merlins ultimately bested the Stormers on their home field, 63-12. Head Coach Luke Gross expected tough competition from the Stormers, a team he described as aggressive.

Glendale Chamber

Glendale came out of the gate strong, with a try by T.J. Downey in the fifth minute. Six other Merlins would score tries by the end of the half, and although the team struggled to convert kicks after, the defense proved solid and Glendale went into the half leading 44 to nothing. Little Rock, who fell to the Dallas Harlequins in their season opener, was able to put points on the board in the second half, scoring two tries and converting one kick after. The Merlins offense proved strong after the break, however, putting up three tries of their own. Downey bookended the match and secured a Glendale victory with a try in the 78th minute.

The Merlins, who named scrumhalf Wes LaBorde Player of the Match, will look to parlay their victory in Arkansas to the coming weekend, when the team again travels to Texas; this time to face as yet undefeated Dallas Rugby. The February 3rd game will be played in Dallas at 2:00pm Mountain Time. February 9 will see the start of the season for the Glendale Merlins Under-20 team, who will host BYU on Infinity Park’s Turf Field at 6pm. Follow the Glendale Merlins on Facebook and Twitter for full-time scores on all games and additional information.

The first home game of the season for the Division I Merlins team is March 10th, when Glendale will face off against the Austin Blacks on Infinity Park’s Turf Field. All Merlins home games will have free admission in 2018. The complete Merlins schedule can be found at on the schedule page.
