The Merlin Men’s and Women’s Division 1 seasons wrapped up last month and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the grit and determination put in by both squads.

The men finished with a fourth place finish in the PRP, which was not exactly the finish we had hoped for, but was still an overall good start in what would be our first year back at the highest level of Division 1 rugby in the U.S . Now that we know what we are capable of, there is no doubt in my mind that we will continue to progress to the top of the PRP standings from here on out.

The Women’s DI side, on the other hand, surpassed my expectations this season. This young Merlin’s team, a feeder program to the WPL, actually had a new head coach for this spring season.  Hannah Stolba, an assistant coach in past seasons, was brought in to lead this side through its second half of the D1 season and really gave this team the support it needed. They placed first in the Frontier Regional Playoffs, before moving on to the USA Rugby D1 Western Club Championships in Austin, where they beat Belmont Shore, then fell to the home favorite, the Austin Valkyries, in the semifinals.  Placing among the top-four teams in the nation is the best showing by the Glendale Women’s D1 Team yet and I know I speak for everyone within the Glendale family when I say – Well done ladies!

We are so proud of the strides both DI teams have made and I can’t wait to see this success continue for a number of our men’s players who have joined the Mountain League this summer up in Vail, and, of course, the Merlin women who will kick off their WPL pre-season training in July!

This year, the WPL’s conferences were reorganized a bit with the promotion of Life West Gladiatrix into the WPL. Life West took the place of the DC Furies, who was relegated to D1. However, to make this work, Life West will be in the Western Conference while Chicago North Shore has made the move into the Eastern Conference.

The Glendale Merlins will be looking to show Life West just what it takes to compete at this level when they face off on August 17 in the Merlin’s WPL home opener. Check out the rest of their schedule for the 2019 Season below and mark your calendars so you won’t miss out on any of the WPL action this season. Games will be played at the Infinity Park turf fields and admission is free!
