Glendale Merlins WPL Team Kicks Off Preseason
As told by Director of Amateur Rugby Luke Gross
Coaches Blog, Glendale Rugby Date 7.9.18, the location – Glendale Rugby 3rd Floor Offices
Tonight, Glendale Women’s Premier League players will come together for their first official team meeting of the 2018 Fall Season and, as their new head coach, I can already tell that these athletes will be bringing everything they have this season, both on and off the field. Last year, they finished with a tough loss in the WPL final to New York and they are definitely ready to put that behind them and prove that they are stronger, wiser and overall better because of it.

I am already proud of the work they have been putting in during the off season, hitting the gym before or after work, scheduling team skill sessions regardless of the weather, but also committing their time to developing the game here locally. Whether it’s helping coach our Glendale Youth Rugby programs, assisting former Eagle Jamie Burke with the development of the Colorado All-Star Girls H.S. Team, which competed in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 at the Rocky Mountain Challenge in June, or even just helping out around the club running our Rugby 101s for the Raptors matches or volunteering their time with the other major events we host here at Infinity Park, it is a really powerful thing to watch how this team works together to tackle the tasks at hand.
In addition to preparing for the upcoming 2018 WPL season – which, by the way, kicks off this year in mid-August versus the normal September start date- several of Glendale’s finest will be also preparing for the 2018 WPL All-Star Match, held at the University of Denver’s Pioneer Field. The WPL All-Star match features an East vs. West match-up between the best in each conference. And, in 2018, nearly half of the West All-Stars team is from the Glendale Merlins WPL side. The West has named 10 Glendale players, the most from any WPL team in the league, plus the Merlins former Head Coach, Kitt Wagner-Ruiz, to lead their All-Star lineup, which just goes to show what kind of skill and leadership there is among the Women’s Merlins. If you are interested in joining the Glendale Women’s Rugby program, whether at the WPL or Division 1 level, contact the women’s recruitment chair at firstname.lastname@example.org or come out to one of the practices to see what we are doing. Our WPL practices Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Infinity Park turf pitch. As a member of the Glendale Rugby Club you will get to train, play and recover in our top-notch rugby facilities. All players have access to our High Altitude Training Center, including medical offices and staff, recovery tubs, plus a new state-of-the-art gym and the best rugby fields the U.S. has to offer.
Furthermore, if you are interested in taking in one of our Women’s Premier League matches, you can find our recently released schedule below. A majority of our home matches this season will be played in the Infinity Park Stadium, and many will also include a double-header featuring our Women’s Team, plus our men’s new professional team, the Raptors. We also have an amazing opportunity to play at home during the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series event, taking place at Infinity Park on Oct. 20 and 21. This is the first time this major world competition is being hosted in Colorado and we are so excited to offer spectators the chance to watch the opening round of the best women’s international sevens competition right here in Glendale. Here’s to another solid season of rugby here in Glendale and continuing to build on our great rugby legacy on and off the pitch!
